Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know when it’s time to say goodbye?
This is one of the hardest decisions you will face as a pet owner. As veterinarians we often base this hard decision on quality of life and that can mean different things for each individual pet and their owners situation.
Paws Farewell are happy to speak with you in an understanding and thoughtful way about your pet's’ quality of life and can help you reflect on your pet’s comfort, mobility, and overall wellbeing. There are also quality of life tools available online to help guide this decision or speak with your regular vet to help determine when the time might be right for you and your loved pet.
At Paws Farewell we feel truly privileged to be able to help end suffering through an experience that is fear, stress and pain free. Euthanasia is not only a way to prevent ongoing suffering, but also prevents suffering from occurring in the first place. Making the decision to euthanise can feel like a heavy burden that often comes with some degree of guilt and in those moments it’s important to remember that it is a gift to be able to say goodbye under peaceful circumstances.
Can I book an appointment after-hours?
Yes, this is an after-hours service only, this includes weekday evenings 6-8pm and weekends 9am-5pm.
How long will the appointment take?
Each appointment takes around 45-60 minutes. We go at a calm and dignified pace that is suitable for you and your family during this sensitive time.
What happens during the ‘at-home’ visit?
We begin by giving your pet a sedative to help them relax and drift off peacefully.
Once they are asleep, we give the final medication, which gently allows them to pass.
You are welcome to be with them the entire time and your presence, touch and words are encouraged during this time. If you’d prefer not to be present, that’s okay too. We’re here to support you in whatever feels right.
We will move at a pace that is comfortable for you and your family to ensure a peaceful process.
What happens after the appointment?
We will respectfully transport your pet to our local pet crematorium, Paws for Thought in Egmont village after the appointment unless you would like some extra time with your beloved pet and are welcome to transport them yourself at a later time or they offer a pick up service too. Ashes and any memorabilia can be collected directly from Paw for Thought and will be thoughtfully arranged by them.
How much does this service cost?
Our pricing depends on your pet’s size, location and any aftercare options you may choose. We will always talk you through costs beforehand, and we’re happy to answer any questions.
Pre-payment is required before the visit.
Do you offer same-day appointments?
While in general this service is a planned process organised in advance, there are some situations where appointments may be available on the day. Please get in touch and we’ll do our best to be there for you.

Quality of Life
Reflecting on your pets’ quality of life can help guide when to make the hard decision of knowing when is is the right time to let them go. Things to consider are your pets’ comfort, mobility and overall physical and mental wellbeing.
When trying to assess your pet’s quality of life it’s important to think about questions like:
Are they still able to do all or some of their favourite activities?
Are they eating and drinking normally?
Do they seem comfortable?
Are they toileting normally?
Noting how many days your pet is having good days compared to bad days is a simple yet effective way to assess your pets overall quality of life. Once the bad days seem as though they are starting to outweigh the good, it’s time to start thinking about making those final peaceful goodbye arrangements.
Dealing With Grief
Losing a beloved pet is never easy, and the decision to euthanise can be particularly heart-wrenching. The pain and grief that follow can feel overwhelming, leaving you with a sense of emptiness and sorrow. It’s also hard when people don’t understand your grief over your pet.
